Bought 3 roses early this year, all doing great. I thought all of them were own-root propagated by Jason before pick up, but 2 of them are grafted by another wholesaler which is bit disappointing. Great quality nevertheless, will buy more next year.

This may sound a little grandiose to say, but bear with me: Kazanlik might be the most important rose of all time. This is the rose of Damask perfume and rose water. It's famously known as the 30 petaled rose ('trigintipetala') which is synonymous with the word rose itself in some languages. Historically it's the rose most likely to have lined the streets of Rome for the emperor (and almost bankrupted the empire, some say). Before that, revered by Egyptian Pharaohs after appearing from trade along the silk road. The Damask is also rich with stories from the time of the crusades and became a cultural staple of stories and symbols of medieval Europe. The Damasks is a foundational parent for the old garden roses, and you can still find examples of its distinctive fragrance in modern hybrids. I suppose looking at the photo, I might have started with saying "such a humble rose..." but it wouldn't have fit the facts or folklore around this incredible shrub. A touch of Canadian winter has broken out through the Fraser Valley, bringing to mind how much I appreciate a rose like 'Hazeldean'. Absolutely bred to laugh off the cold, this beauty is hardy to zone 2. The very full flower form and density of petals is a pleasant surprise, considering its reported parentage from the simple-flowered Scots Rose x Persian Yellow.
