Description
Filipendula rubra ‘Venusta’—commonly known as Queen of the Prairie—is a bold, clump-forming perennial native to North America. It produces large, fluffy panicles of deep pink flowers from early to late summer, held high on sturdy stems above deeply lobed, bright green foliage. The blooms are pleasantly fragrant and mature to a softer pink over time. This cultivar typically reaches a height of 5 to 8 feet (1.5 to 2.4 meters) and spreads about 3 to 4 feet (0.9 to 1.2 meters). It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, humus-rich, consistently moist soils. It’s well-suited for rain gardens, moist meadows, or areas near ponds and streams. Hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9, ‘Venusta’ is also deer and rabbit resistant. Notably, this cultivar has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, recognizing its exceptional performance in gardens.
